For breakfast, I had an egg, a slice of watermelon (which was slightly mealy, yuck) and a kaiser roll, or hard roll as they call them up North. My hubby is from NJ and up there a hard roll with soft, creamy, sweet butter is a breakfast item. The northern version of the biscuit I guess. My mother and sister-in-law would go on and on ad nauseum about the glory that is the hard roll and frankly I couldn't figure out the big deal. First, I didn't understand what they meant by hard roll. What popped into my head was a vision of a small french bread roll and for them to rave about eating this for breakfast, well, let's just say I wasn't rushing out to get one instead of a biscuit. Add this to the fact that they are forever talking about how much better things are up there than down here. Go back then! :) Well, last year, we took a family trip up North and visited a small, family-owned bakery that served hard rolls and I must tell you...it was the most phenomenal thing I've eaten. It was indescribable and we have been trying to duplicate it here ever since. Damn near impossible I tell ya. It must be the water because I just haven't been able to do it. A grocery store here sells kaiser rolls that come close though. If only I could get the butter consistency right because it's just not hitting the mark. All that to explain why there is a kaiser roll on my plate this morning.

Then my sister called and told me about a glorious tomato bisque she had made last night, using canned tomatoes. Being a soup-aholic immediately I thought, "I have canned tomatoes!" So I knew what I was having for lunch!

Oh, god, I love soup. I especially love to make it. You can make something quickly, with very little effort and good, wholesome ingredients. For this soup I used one 14 oz can of diced tomatoes and the juice, a tsp of chicken boullion, a 1/2 tsp of garlic powder and onion powder, sprinkled in some dried thyme leaves and basil, a pinch of salt, a pinch of sugar, and a 1.5 cups of half and half. Cook until warmed through. I served it with a salad topped with Newman's Own Light Balsamic Vinaigrette and a sourdough roll which ended up uneaten. See, here's my plate when I finished lunch:

Later in the day I ate two Newman's Own oreo cookies and chugged some milk from the container. Classy, right?
Sean's on his way home now with Chick-fil-a. I''ll try to get a photo up tonight if I can. If not, I'm having the Original Sandwich (1/2) some fries and a lemonade.
I love Chick-fil-a. If you don't have one where you live, I pity you. Seriously. It's that damn good. Chick-fil-a is to the chicken sandwich what Krispy Kreme is to doughnuts. So, so good. Sean will be lucky if he doesn't get bum-rushed at the door!

Mmmmm...Chick-fil-A....
That's what Buck brought home for lunch yesterday.
Mmmmmmmm...
It's heavenly isn't it??
Oh yeah, I forgot to ask-did you make up the tomato bisque recipe? I am totally impressed!
And did you have to mention Krispy Kreme? ;)
Well, my sister gave me the inspiration after she described her soup so I can't claim that I totally made it up but mine was different than hers. She used whole tomatoes, tomato paste, chicken stock, basil, and half and half. I didn't have any stock so I just had to use the powdered chicken boullion and I added a few more things to it because I like a lot of flavor. But I do make up soup recipes all the time because I just love soup so much. Tomorrow I'm making a roasted red pepper soup!
I know, I made myself crave a lemon-filled doughnut right after I typed the words! :)
